Veronika, Luhansk

Across the conflict stricken regions of Ukraine diabetes festers due to the war. The war has resulted in there being no medical support in the disputed territories. Along with the stresses the conflict brings and the struggle to provide children with a healthy diet, children are suffering with a severe lack of insulin and healthy food causing distress for single parents and families. ChildAid is working tirelessly with local volunteers to supply these children with insulin, medicine and food.

Veronika lives in Luhansk and is eleven years old. She became ill in July 2015 with diabetes due to the stress resulting from the Ukraine conflict. The area she lives in has been repeatedly bombed and she has witnessed horrific fighting. In late summer of 2015 she was taken to intensive care due to the high level of blood sugar.

When she was diagnosed with diabetes her parents were shocked. Her mother told our volunteers: "I did not know what to do, never had diabetes in the family, no on ever got sick. We did not know where to get medication. We did not know how we would afford the medication".

Desperate for help, Veronika's mother and father contacted our local volunteers who provided assistance. Veronika's mother is so grateful for the help from ChildAid supporters in this time. She has also started to attend church with Veronika and pray for her healing.
